MP4

Published: Feb 01, 2007

MPEG-4 Part 14 is a mulitmedia container format that can embedded with virtually any video, audio, subtitle data or even still images (although this is less common). It was developed for as a steaming video format although now is used in a wide variety of portable media devices as well (such as mobile phones, iPods etc). Originally based on the Quicktime format it has since been modified and improved upon in many different ways.

While the file extension .mp4 is the most common, there are a number of others used to help specify what the file contains, some of the most common ones are:

m4a – used for MP4 files that contain audio data only.

m4b – used for Audiobook files and podcasts that contain metadata such as chapter markers, images and hyperlinks.

m4v – used for MP4 files that contain audio and video data.

None of these would be particularly common except for the popularity of the iPod and the associated iTunes store.
